Water and Wastewater Treatment Chemicals: Shortages and Skyrocketing Prices
April 15, 2009

This Webcast includes a discussion of findings of the Water Research Foundation project “Supply of Critical Drinking Water and Wastewater Treatment Chemicals – A White Paper for Understanding Recent Chemical Price Increases and Shortages” (Project 4225).

Water treatment chemicals play a critical role in providing clean water to protect public health and the environment. Water and wastewater utilities have been experiencing significant water treatment chemical price increases and chemical shortages in the last several years. This issue has significant implications for utility finance, regulatory compliance, public and environmental health, security, and long-term utility sustainability. The water community lacks current and readily available information regarding the markets for water treatment chemicals.

This Webcast presents what is known about the issue and the driving forces behind the recent price and chemical availability concerns. It also presents critical knowledge gaps and potential research needs, important stakeholders and potential sources of information that can help clarify the issue, as well as recommendations for next steps towards effectively managing the issue.
