Project Summary:
Develops, tests, and evaluates proactive strategies and tools for utilities to identify and track emerging drinking water contaminants (e.g., endocrine disruptors, pharmaceuticals, MTBE [methyl tertiary-butyl ether], radon, etc.). Also provides strategies and tools for utilities to proactively and effectively communicate information to the public about the emerging contaminants. Published in 2004.

Benefits to the Drinking Water Supply Community:
This research will provide strategies and tools utilities can use to identify and track emerging drinking water contaminants. It will also provide recommendations on proactive communication strategies and tools to increase public understanding of the complex issues, hazards, and risks associated with the contaminants. This, in turn, will increase public confidence and trust in drinking water utilities and facilitate public support for utility decisions.
