Multi-Utility Buried Pipes and Appurtenances Location Workshop #2882

Project Summary:
Based on input from representatives of different types of utilities (i.e., water, gas, sewer, storm drainage, electricity, telecommunications, etc.), industry associations, and contractors, estimates the magnitude of damage caused by lack of information on buried pipes and appurtenances. Reviews multi-utility buried pipe and appurtenance location needs and evaluates the performance of existing technologies. Recommends performance specifications for new pipe and appurtenance location technologies and possible funding routes for the development of new technologies. Research partner: UKWIR. Benefits to the Drinking Water Supply Community:
The availability of accurate tools and techniques for locating multi-utility buried pipes and appurtenances would reduce the risk and cost of accidental damage during excavations, directional drilling, and other street construction activities. Smaller, less disruptive excavations would be possible if contractors or utility field workers had prior knowledge of the accurate locations of all buried pipes and appurtenances. This could reduce utility project costs and minimize traffic and service disruptions.
